Order picking is a mundane but necessary part of supply chain operations. A forward-thinking startup robotics company is working to perfect an automated system that could revolutionize fulfillment centers in the near future.

Robots to the Rescue

In early April, Massachusetts-based RightHand Robotics introduced their RightPick platform at a supply chain event. The innovative system is aimed at improving order fulfillment in the pharmaceutical, electronics, grocery and apparel industries.

RightHand is not the first company to envision robotics as a solution for more efficient order fulfillment. The drawback was getting a robot’s mechanical “hand” to make adjustments for different sizes and types of items, but the Harvard-trained team that launched RightHand believe they have found the answer in the cloud.

How Do You “Teach” a Robot?

Current prototypes use a robotic hand with compliant “fingers” and a suction cup at the center. As the robot spends time picking random objects from a conveyor belt, data is transmitted from a camera inside its hand up to the cloud, where the information can be used to “train” other robots.

Professor Ken Goldberg of UC Berkeley, an expert on robot manipulation and learning, expressed admiration for the “clever mechanism” that RightPick has applied to the concept of robotic order-picking. For companies such as Amazon that ship a myriad of products in all shapes and sizes, RightHand could be a game-changer.

Adopting greener practices can have a number of benefits for a warehouse or distribution environment. Switching from propane powered, combustion engine lifts to battery powered warehouse tow tugs can help to increase worker efficiency, improve working conditions and reduce operational costs.

Warehouse tow tugs from DJ Products cost less to operate and to maintain than traditional combustion engine lifts. Warehouse tow tugs are powered by long lasting batteries and use no costly fossil fuels at all during operation. These versatile warehouse tugs can run for an entire eight hour shift on a single battery charge which allows employees to address pertinent duties without losing valuable time by stopping to refuel.

In a fast paced warehouse environment employee ability to focus is essential for preventing injuries. The warehouse tow tugs from DJ Products are virtually silent during operation. By upgrading from combustion engine lifts to battery powered tugs owners can create a safer working environment with fewer distractions. Eliminating distractions can help to reduce the possibility of accidents and ultimately reduce the potential for debilitating injuries to valuable employees.

The battery powered tugs available from DJ Products also produce no emissions during operation. Traditional propane powered combustion engine lifts and tugs can contribute to poor air quality in a warehouse or distribution center environment. By eliminating combustion engine equipment in favor of battery powered warehouse tow tugs distribution center owners help to create a healthier environment for valuable employees.

Energy efficient upgrades can have a variety of benefits for a business but many involve a substantial upfront investment. Upgrading outdated equipment for battery powered warehouse tow tugs is a fast green upgrade that can help improve efficiency and safety and reduce costs without an exceedingly high price tag.
